As a follow-up to this drive for quality, two years later, in 1999, the SYSTECODE International Certification system was introduced. Its objective? To certify cork stopper manufacturers that comply with the regulations of the International Code of Cork Stopper Manufacturing Practice. In the year 2000, under the 1st SYSTECODE, 87 Portuguese companies were certified. In 2001, this number increased to 143 and, by 2002, 218 Portuguese companies had received certification. In 2003 and 2004, the numbers grew to 249 and 274, respectively. In 2005 the number reach 278, in 2006 grew to 428 and in 2007 to 446. About 90% of these companies are APCOR members. Currently, the ICCSMP and the resulting SYSTECODE certification are among the most important modernizing factors at the heart of the cork industry. They require companies to subscribe to the most advanced production techniques, in addition to demanding extensive and detailed knowledge of materials and strict compliance with environmental regulations and occupational safety and health regulations. The SYSTECODE is a guarantee of quality and reliability, with an outcome that the market has already began to feel and taste in wines bottled since 2001.
