Cork wins against polystyrene when it comes to safety
A group of researchers at Aveiro University found that cork performs better than polystyrene in helmets for motor vehicles. The 100% natural material overtakes polystyrene, which is the material used by all helmet manufacturers worldwide, when it comes to safety. Cork has greater capacity to absorb an impact and it keeps this capacity intact if the motorcyclist suffers multiple blows to the head. The helmet lined with cork on the inside forms part of the research coordinated by Ricardo Sousa, professor of the Mechanical Engineering Department of Aveiro University.
